Thermostat: Service and Repair

REMOVAL 

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the engine coolant.
3. Disconnect the heater return hose from the thermostat cover.
4. Remove the thermostat cover.
5. Remove the thermostat.
6. Remove the thermostat housing gasket.
7. Remove the thermostat sealing ring.

INSTALLATION 

1. Install the thermostat sealing ring.

NOTE: Make sure the sealing ring is properly install on the thermostat before the thermostat cover is installed.

2. Position the gasket on the cylinder head before the thermostat is installed.
3. Install the thermostat into the thermostat cover and rotate the thermostat into the water outlet connector in a clockwise direction to secure the

thermostat to the connector.

NOTE:  It is critical that the correct thermostat alignment is made, to provide coolant flow to the heater.

4. Install the thermostat cover.

Tightening torque:  20-30 Nm (14-21 ft. lbs.) 

CAUTION: Position the hose clamp in the original position on the hose, and squeeze the clamp lightly with large pliers to ensure a good fit.

5. Fill the radiator with the specified amount and type of engine coolant.
6. Connect the negative battery cable.
