Worm-Shaft (10)
1. Rotate the worm-shaft in the ball nut. If tightness or binding is felt, replace the assembly.
2. Apply steering gear grease to the worm-shaft bearings.
3. Install the worm-shaft thrust bearings over the worm-shaft splined end.
4. Insert the worm-shaft assembly into the housing.
5. Feed the splined end of the worm-shaft through the bearing cup and seal.
6. Place the remaining worm-shaft thrust bearing in the adjuster plug bearing cup.
7. Install the adjuster plug and locknut into the housing opening.
Sector Cover And Bushing Assembly, Housing (2 & 16)
1. Position the sector adjusting screw and shim into the sector shaft slot.
2. Check the clearance between the screw head and the bottom of the sector shaft T-slot.
3. If the clearance is greater than 0.10mm (0.004 inch), install a new shim as required to reduce the clearance.
4. Lubricate the steering gear with 290 grams (10.2 oz.) of steering gear grease.
a. Rotate the worm-shaft until the ball nut is near the end of its travel.
b. Pack grease into the housing.
c. Rotate the worm-shaft to the opposite end.
d. Pack the remaining grease into the housing.
5. Rotate the worm-shaft until the ball nut is in the center of travel.
6. Insert the sector shaft assembly into the housing so that the center tooth enters the center rack tooth space in the ball nut.
7. Pack the remaining grease into the housing.
8. Apply a 3.20 mm (0.13 inch) wide x 3.20 mm (0.13 inch) high bead of silicone sealant to the mating surfaces of the sector cover and housing.
NOTE: The two mating surfaces must be dry and free of grease and all foreign materials.
9. Approximately five minutes after applying the sealant, engage the sector adjuster screw with the tapped hole in the center of the sector cover
by turning the screw counterclockwise.
