Cylinder Head Gasket: Service and Repair
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove engine under cover, if equipped, and drain engine coolant, then remove air cleaner assembly.
3.
Using wrench, turn crankshaft and align No. 1 piston at TDC.
4.
Remove cooling fan and radiator cowling.
4.
Remove oil level dipstick, then the accelerator cable and cruise control cable, as required.
5.
Disconnect and plug fuel hoses and, on manual transmission models, remove fuel pump.
6.
Disconnect brake vacuum hose, then the 3-way solenoid valves and vacuum sensor assembly. Do not disconnect vacuum tubes.
7.
Disconnect duty solenoid valves assembly, then the vacuum switch. Do not disconnect vacuum tubes.
8.
Disconnect canister hoses, then the engine harness electrical connector.
9.
Disconnect coil wire and spark plug wires, then remove distributor assembly.
10.
Remove secondary air pipe assembly and front engine hanger.
11.
Remove upper radiator hose and water bypass hoses and brackets.
12.
Remove intake manifold and carburetor assembly.
13.
Remove exhaust manifold insulator, then the exhaust manifold.
14.
Remove timing belt upper cover, then turn crankshaft to align ``A'' or ``triangle'' mark on camshaft pulley with front housing timing mark.
15.
Remove timing belt tensioner, spring and timing belt.
16.
Remove camshaft pulley, then the engine ground and rear engine hanger.

Remove valve cover, then gradually loosen and remove cylinder head attaching bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 2.
18.
Remove cylinder head, then the front cover and thermostat assembly as necessary.

19.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque cylinder head attaching bolts to specifications in sequence, Fig. 18.
b. Install camshaft pulley onto dowel pin and keyway with ``A'' or ``triangle'' mark at 12 o'clock position. Torque camshaft pulley attaching bolts
to 35-48 ft.lbs. (47-65 N-m).
