Air Filter Element: Description and Operation
Air Cleaner Assembly
Dirt and dust particles in the air are abrasive and, if allowed to enter the engine with the intake air, can cause significant damage in a relatively short
period of time. The air cleaner assembly, mounted on top of the carburetor, contains a paper filter element that removes these particles from the intake
air. It also provides for the following:
Thermal Air Valve

Heated air intake for improved fuel atomization when the engine is cold.
A bimetallic spring, installed in the air cleaner snorkel, operates a flap air valve. When the engine is cold and the intake air is cold, the spring closes the
flap to fresh air from the snorkel and hot air gathered from around the exhaust manifold is allowed into the air cleaner box. As the air temperature in the
engine compartment rises, the spring moves the air flap to cover the hot air inlet, allowing fresh warm air in through the snorkel.
Hot Idle Compensator

Air bleed (hot idle compensator valve) for leaner mixture to stabilize the idle when the engine is hot.
