Choke Thermostat/Heater: Description and Operation

Automatic Choke Assembly

Automatic choke assembly consists of:

^ Choke valve.
^ Electrically heated bimetallic choke spring and housing.
^ Fast idle cam.
^ Choke vacuum diaphragm.

When the engine is cold, the automatic choke assembly does two things. The choke valve closes to restrict air and create a low pressure in the 
carburetor venturi so extra fuel is drawn in through the primary slow and main metering circuits. This provides a richer mixture to compensate for
fuel condensation on the inner walls of the intake manifold.

While the choke valve is closed, the fast idle cam holds the throttle valve slightly open to stabilize the idle during warm-up. When the engine is
started, electrical current is supplied to the bimetallic spring in the choke housing, warming the spring. As the spring heats up, it slowly coils up
tighter, opening the choke valve. As the choke opens, the fast idle cam rotates to let the throttle back to its normal idle stop position.
