Dashpot: Description and Operation

Dashpot

The dashpot consists of a diaphragm chamber with a small orifice open to the atmosphere, and a light spring. When the throttle is open, the light spring
pressure extends the dashpot. When the throttle closes, it first comes to rest against the dashpot, which lets the throttle close slowly the rest of the way as
air is forced out of the chamber through the orifice. This prevents the throttle from suddenly slaming shut and causing a very rich condition that could
damage the catalytic converter.
