For inspection of the internal components of the starter motors, refer to Fig. 16.
Hold-In Test
For this procedure, it is necessary to remove starter magnetic switch from starter.
1.
Connect battery positive to magnetic switch S terminal. Ground switch body.
2.
Push plunger into switch. Ensure plunger stays in switch.
Inspection
Before proceeding, inspect the following:
1.
Ensure battery is fully charged.
2.
If the magnetic switch is hot, it may not function even if voltages are correct.
3.
Engine cranking speed is greatly affected by engine oil viscosity.
Inspection
1.
Turn ignition switch to Start position.
2.
Measure voltage between starter solenoid S terminal and ground.
3.
If voltage is 8 volts or more, there is a starter malfunction. If voltage is less than 8 volts, there is malfunction in the wiring harness. Turn ignition
switch to the Start position. If a clicking noise is heard from starter area, inspect starter motor and wiring harness. If nothing happened, proceed to
