Air Filter Element: Description and Operation

Air Intake System

Dirt and dust particles in the air are abrasive and, if allowed to enter the engine with the intake air, can cause significant damage in a relatively short
period of time. The air cleaner assembly contains a paper filter element that removes these particles from the intake air.

Air entering the intake system flows through the air cleaner, then through ducts to the air mass sensor and on to the throttle body and intake manifold.
Located between the air mass sensor and throttle body is a large chamber called the "resonance chamber". The chamber reduces pulsing in the intake
ducts due to the valves opening and closing. This provides a more constant air flow, which reduces intake noise and helps increase torque during low
speed wide open throttle operation.
