DIAGNOSING POWER STEERING RACK OIL LEAKAGE

DESCRIPTION

When diagnosing a power steering rack leakage, be sure to identify the location of the leak first before replacing the P/S rack. Some P/S rack assemblies
have been unnecessarily replaced.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

To locate leakage, inspect the P/S system as follows:

1.

If the reservoir is at the specified level, the system is normal.

2.

If the reservoir is lower than the specified level perform the following test:

PRESSURIZING THE P/S SYSTEM

a)

Start the engine and let it idle.

b)

Turn and briefly hold the steering wheel fully to the right and left. Repeat this step several times.
