Axle Bearing: Service and Repair

Refer to Fig. 4 when replacing rear axle shaft bearings.

1.

Remove axle shaft from vehicle, refer to AXLE SHAFT. 

2.

Remove retaining ring.

3.

Using a grinder, grind a section of bearing collar until it is approximately .5 millimeter thick.

4.

Cut bearing collar with a chisel at the ground section and remove bearing collar.

Remove bearing using special plate tool No. 49 S120 521, rod tool No. 49 S120 522 and attachment tool No. 49 S121 523A or equivalents, Fig. 5.

Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Apply grease to new oil seal lip and install using a press and special bearing separator tool No. 49 1011 748 or equivalent, Fig. 6.
b. Install bearing collar using a press and special bearing separator tool No. 49 1011 748 or equivalent, Fig. 7.
