Axle Shaft: Service and Repair

Refer to Fig. 1 when replacing rear axle shafts.

1.

Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assemblies.

2.

Remove brake drum and brake shoe assembly.

3.

Disconnect brake line at wheel cylinder.

Remove backing plate and axle shaft using special puller tool No. 49 0223 630B and attachment tool No. 49 8501 631A or equivalent, Fig. 2.

5.

Remove oil seal from rear axle housing.

Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Apply grease to new oil seal lip and install with special seal driver tool No. 49 G030 797 and attachment tool No. 49 F027 005 or equivalent,

b. Bleed brake system.
