COLD ENGINE PISTON SLAPPING
DESCRIPTION
Some 1988-'91 929 and 1989-'91 MPV models with JE SOHC engine may experience piston slapping after cold engine start. Replacement pistons are
available to correct this problem.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
Replace all pistons according to Workshop Manual procedures, Section "1" or "B."
NOTE:

Refer to the Workshop Manual to check cylinder bore taper out-of-round and piston-to-cylinder clearance specifications.

Different type pistons may be required for each cylinder. Types available are "Type A," "Type C," and "Type O." To identify the type required,
refer to the stamping on the bottom, left, rear portion of the block.
Example:
According to the stamp on the engine block in the example provided below, this engine requires the following pistons:
"Type A" piston in the No. 5 cylinder
"Type C" piston in the No. 2 cylinder
"Type O" piston in the No. 1, 3, 4, & 6 cylinders
NOTE:
The stamp maybe difficult to see due to corrosion. Sand and/or wire brush the stamped area for visual inspection.
