Subject
TORQUE CONVERTER WHINE
DESCRIPTION
While idling in "Drive" or driving at about 40 mph, a whine noise may be heard from the transmission. This noise is not noticeable in "Park" and
"Neutral."
The noise is caused by the torque converter bearing contacting the weld at the torque converter sleeve. An improved machine finish process during
torque converter manufacturing eliminates this contact.
Torque converters using the new machining process have been used in vehicle production since August 1, 1990. Vehicles produced prior to August 1,
1990 experiencing this problem should have the new torque converter installed.
