1. Set the SST (49 G032 303) and SST (49 S032 313), or equivalent.
2. Insert the SSTs into the gear housing until it contacts the bearing, then press out the oil seal together with the bearing.

INSPECTION 

Tie-rod End (2) 
1. Inspect the tie-rod end for damage and boot cracks. Replace it if necessary.
2. Inspect the ball joint for looseness. Replace the tie-rod end if necessary.
3. Rotate the ball joint five times.

4. Measure the rotation torque of the ball joint by using the Special Service Tool (SST) and a pull scale.

Rotation torque:  0.3 - 2.9 Nm (2.6 - 26 inch lbs.) 
Pull scale reading:  3 - 29 N (0.7 - 6.6 lbs.) 

5. If not within the specification, replace the tie-rod end.

Tie Rod (8) 
1. Inspect the tie rod for bending and damage. Replace it if necessary.
2. Inspect the ball joint for looseness. Replace the tie rod if necessary.
3. Swing the tie rod five times.

4. Measure the swing torque by using a pull scale.

Swinging torque:  0.5 - 3.1 Nm (4.4 - 27.7 inch lbs.) 
Pull scale reading:  3.0 - 19.6 N (0.6 - 4.40 lbs.) 

5. If not within the specification, replace the tie rod.

Steering Rack (21) 
1. Inspect for cracking, damage, and tooth wear. Replace if necessary.
