WATER LEAK FROM SLIDING SUNROOF
APPLICABLE MODELS
1996-98 MPV with a sliding sunroof and a VIN lower than W0831456.
DESCRIPTION
On some '96-98 MPV models, water may leak into the vehicle cabin (passenger compartment) and/or center interior light lens (dome light) from the
sliding sunroof area.
Any of the following conditions may cause water leakage.
1.
Water may be trapped in the sunroof unit during a rain or car wash and later enters the vehicle cabin or center interior light lens when stopped or
parked on a slope.
2.
Water may be trapped in the sunroof unit due to bent or pinched drain hose between the trims and the vehicle body, which does not permit
drainage.
3.
Water may be collected along the guide rails and enter into the vehicle cabin, due to insufficient butyl tape under the guide rail.
4.
Water may enter the vehicle cabin when a large quantity of water is applied to the rear edge of the glass panel and the weatherstrip can not support
or block water from entering the vehicle.
Customers complaining of water leakage should have the vehicle inspected and repaired, according to this bulletin.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.
Before repair, make sure that the problem occurs with the sunroof completely closed. The sunroof is designed to close a few seconds after the
sunshade closes. Some customers misunderstand the operation of the sunroof and assume that when the sunshade closes, the sunroof also closes
completely. DO NOT confuse this concern with water leakage which occurs when water gets on the roof with the sunroof partially or not fully
closed.
2.

If resistance is tight at all of the 8 locations, remove headliner (refer to WSM) and perform Condition A.
