Wheel Speed Sensor: Testing and Inspection

CLEARANCE AND VOLTAGE CHECK

1.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tires.

2.

Check for damaged or loose wheel speed sensor.

3.

Check clearance between wheel speed sensor and sensor rotor. Clearance should be between 0.012-0.043 inches.

4.

If not within specifications, replace sensor rotor or wheel speed sensor.

5.

Check resistance at wheel speed sensor, resistance should be between 1.6-2.0 kohms.

6.

If not within specifications, replace speed sensor.

VOLTAGE CHECK

    The ABS control unit will memorize a failure when wheel is turned, so perform memory cancel operation after completing test.

1.

Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect wheel speed sensor connector.

2.

Rotate wheel one revolution per second by hand, check for voltage at wheel speed sensor terminal. Voltage should be between 0.25-1.2 volts.

3.

If not within specifications replace wheel speed sensor or rotor.
