DESCRIPTION
Customer Concerns
When a Miata is stored for extended periods of time (minimum 30 days) remove the negative battery terminal. This will prevent "key-off" current from
discharging the battery.
When placing the vehicle back in service, connect the negative battery terminal, start and operate the engine until normal operating temperature is
achieved.
NOTE:
Service Advisors should recommend that the customer have the battery inspected and if necessary, charged.
Customers should also be reminded to copy down their personnel code for the audio system prior to disconnecting the negative battery terminal.
Dealer Concerns
The 1996 M-Edition Miata is equipped with a Keyless Entry / Security System that could cause the battery to discharge when the vehicle is stored for an
extended period.
While the vehicle is in dealer inventory, the 3-position valet switch should be in the "Impact Off" position. If the valet switch is in the "Off" position the
red light on the switch will flash regardless of whether the vehicle is locked or unlocked. This flashing red light increases the draw on the battery and
may cause complete discharge if the vehicle is not started periodically.
If the vehicle will be stored for more than 30 days without periodic engine starting, remove the 20 amp in-line fuse for the KES system. This fuse is
located under the dash near the KES module.
NOTE:
Install the fuse prior to retail delivery.
Service Advisors should instruct customers with the Keyless Entry/ Security System to follow these instructions as well when storing the vehicle.
