Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

Crank Angle Sensor

PURPOSE

Generates 2 signals interpreted by the ECU to determine #1 cylinder TDC ("G" signal) and engine rpm ("Ne" signal detects crank angle at 180°
intervals). ECU uses this information, together with other operating condition inputs, to calculate ignition timing.

LOCATION

Right rear end of cylinder head.

OPERATION

Consists of a slotted disc that turns with the cam-driven shaft, and a stationary pick-up assembly.  As the disc rotates past the pick-up, slots
alternately pass and block photo-diode light transmission.

CONSTRUCTION

Optical pick-up type sensor, consisting of a turning slotted disc and stationary pick-up assembly.
