DESCRIPTION
HLA noise may be heard when the engine runs at idle for over 30 minutes. This is caused when air enters the oil gallery. To prevent this condition, the
configuration of the oil pump plunger has been changed. If you receive a customer complaint regarding HLA noise, test for this symptom and repair
using the procedures listed below.
REPAIR PROCEDURES
1.
Verify the complaint. HLA noise occurs in the top of the engine and is several times faster than the engine revolution.
NOTE:
Verify the complaint by running the engine at idle for approximately 30 minutes. Monitor engine temperature to avoid overheating during
validation.
2.
If HLA noise is confirmed after a 30 minute period, perform steps 3 through 33 to replace the oil pump plunger with a new part.
3.
If HLA noise occurs prior to 30 minutes, refer to the workshop manual for troubleshooting instructions. Record any preset stations on the vehicle's
audio system.
4.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
5.
Remove dip stick.
6.
Raise and support the vehicle.
7.
Remove RH, front splash shield.
8.
Drain oil and reinstall drain plug.
9.
Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
