Steering Gear: Service and Repair
With Manual Steering
Removal and Installation
1.
Raise and support front of vehicle and remove front wheels.
2.
Remove steering shaft to pinion coupling attaching bolt.
3.
Remove cotter pins and nuts from tie rod ends.
4.
Remove splash shield, then disconnect tie rods from steering knuckles using tool No. 490118850C or equivalent.
5.
Remove steering gear attaching bolts, then the steering gear and linkage.
6.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque tie rod to 58-72 ft.lbs. on 1984-87 models or to 22-33 ft.lbs. on 1988 models.

Drain lubricant from steering gear housing, then install steering gear assembly in a suitable vise, Fig. 11.
2.
Scribe alignment marks on tie rod ends, then remove tie rod ends together with nuts and clips.
3.
Remove boot wires and boots.
