Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair
Hydraulic lash adjusters (HLAs) are used instead of hydraulic lifters.
The following procedure addresses lash adjuster replacement.
1. Deactivate audio anti-theft function, as outlined under Technician Safety Information, before disconnecting battery.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove timing belt as outlined in Timing Belt.
4. Remove distributor as outlined in Ignition.
5. Remove camshaft as outlined in Camshaft.
6. Mark HLA to show original position and remove.
7. Store HLA in engine oil.
8. With HLA filled with oil, hold at A and press on B, Fig. 9. If B moves, replace HLA.

9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply clean engine oil to HLA friction surfaces.
b. Used HLAs must be installed in original positions.
c. Ensure HLA moves smoothly in bore.
10. Reactivate audio anti-theft function as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
