LIFTGATE

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS

2002-2003 Protege5

DESCRIPTION

Some customers may experience an unusual noise and/or feel that excessive effort is required when operating the rear liftgate. These conditions may be
the result of a lack of lubrication in one or more liftgate damper stay(s) ball joints.

The replacement damper stays have been modified to prevent the recurrence of these conditions.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1.

Verify customer concern.

2.

Inspect rear liftgate damper stay(s) ball joints for binding.

^

If binding is found, replace both sides with modified parts according to Workshop Manual (section 09-11 LIFTGATE
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).

WARNING:

Removing the damper stay(s) without supporting the liftgate can be dangerous. The liftgate may fall and injure you. Open the liftgate fully and
support it before removing the damper.

3.

Verify repair.
