1997-98 Protege with automatic transmission.
DESCRIPTION
Under light throttle, a shift shock may occur late in the 1-2 upshift. This condition is caused by excessive pressures being applied to the 2-4 brake band
servo piston late in the 2-4 brake band application.
Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle repaired using the following procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.
Verify customer complaint by testing the vehicle under the following conditions.
A.
With a constant throttle opening of 1/8 - 1/4, shift shock occurs at the end of the 1-2 upshift.
OR
B.
When releasing the accelerator pedal from a 1/8 - 1/4 open throttle, shift shock occurs at the end of the 1-2 upshift.

If shift shock occurs, during conditions A or B, proceed to STEP 2.

If no shift shock is present, refer to the Workshop Manual (section K) for further diagnostics.
Note

If this REPAIR PROCEDURE is performed on vehicles that do not meet conditions A or B, shift shock may occur during the beginning of
the 1-2 upshift.
