Hold steering gear housing in a vise.

3.

Remove nut holding the pitman arm and remove pitman arm.

4.

Remove the sector shaft adjusting screw locknut.

5.

Remove the side cover attaching bolts, then side cover and gasket by turning the adjusting screw clockwise through the cover.

6.

Remove the adjusting screw and shim from the slot at the end of the sector shaft.

7.

Carefully remove the sector shaft from the gear housing so as not to damage the bushing and oil seal.

8.

Remove the bolts that attach the end cover or column jacket to the gear housing and remove the end cover or column jacket and shims.

9.

Remove the worm shaft and ball nut assembly from the gear housing. Do not disassemble worm shaft and ball nut assembly. 

10.

Remove the oil seal from the gear housing, if necessary.

ASSEMBLY

Install oil seal into the gear housing.

2.

Insert the worm shaft and ball nut assembly into the gear housing, Fig. 1. 

3.

Install end cover and preload adjusting shims to the gear housing and adjust worm bearing preload to approximately .5-1.3 lbs. 

4.

Install the adjusting screw into the slot at the end of the sector shaft. Check the end clearance with a feeler gauge, and adjust this clearance to be
.004 inch by inserting appropriate shims.

5.

Turn the worm shaft and place the rack in the center position of the worm in the gear housing. Insert the sector shaft and adjusting screw into the
gear housing, being careful not to damage the bushes and oil seal. Ensure center of the sector gear is in alignment with the center of the racks.

6.

Place the side cover and the gasket onto the adjusting screw and turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise until properly positioned.

7.

Install and tighten side cover attaching bolts.

8.

Adjust the backlash between the sector gear and rack. Backlash should be 0-.004 inch.

9.

Install the pitman arm onto the sector shaft, aligning the identification marks of the pitman arm and sector shaft. Install the pitman arm attaching
nut.
