Intercooler: Description and Operation
Intake Air System
The intercooler, located on top of the throttle body/intake manifold assembly, cools the compressed air charge from the turbocharger.
When air is compressed, its temperature increases. This can contribute significantly to detonation (or spark knock). Also, since the turbocharger is driven
by hot exhaust gasses, it gets very hot which further heats the intake air charge. To prevent excessive detonation and take full advantage of the
turbocharger, the compressed air charge from the turbo must be cooled before entering the engine. Hot air from the turbocharger passes through the
intercooler which dissipates the excess heat to the atmosphere like a radiator.
