Wastegate Solenoid: Description and Operation
Turbocharger Control System
The turbocharger system utilizes the energy of exiting exhaust gas to spin a turbine that pressurizes intake air. This charges the combustion chambers
with more air than non-turbocharged intake systems, resulting in increased engine power and torque output.
To obtain maximum benefit from turbocharging while preventing possible engine damage, system boost pressure is ECU regulated by means of a boost
pressure control duty solenoid valve. The solenoid valve controls vacuum to a wastegate valve actuator which in turn opens and closes the wastegate
valve to vary boost pressure.
The ECU uses these inputs to calculate its regulation of the boost pressure control duty solenoid valve:
Crank angle sensor
Pressure sensor
Throttle sensor (full range)
