Neutral Safety Switch: Testing and Inspection

OPERATION INSPECTION

Inhibitor Switch Testing

1.

With ignition switch in "START" position, check that starter motor only operates with gear selector in "P" or "N" positions.

2.

Check that back-up lights illuminate with gear selector in "R" position.

3.

If not as specified, check inhibitor switch, wiring and connections.  Also check switch adjustment.  Refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES.

CONTINUITY CHECK

1.

Raise vehicle and support in a safe manner.

2.

Disconnect select lever from manual shaft.

3.

Unplug inhibitor switch connector and check continuity across terminals as described on image table.

4.

If not as specified, adjust switch and recheck.  Refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES.

5.

If still incorrect after adjustment, replace switch if no other problems have been detected.
