Brake Rotor/Disc: Service and Repair
Front
Brake Pads, Replace
1.
Raise and support front of vehicle.
2.
Remove front wheel.
3.
Remove caliper lower attaching bolt and swing caliper upward. Remove spring, brake pads and shims.
4.
Reverse procedure to install. If difficulty is encountered when installing brake pads, proceed as follows:
a. Remove rubber cap from bleeder screw.
b. Connect one end of a vinyl hose to screw and place opposite end in a suitable container.
c. Open bleeder screw and press piston into cylinder using tool No. 490221600C or equivalent.
d. Tighten bleeder screw, then remove hose and tool.
Caliper, Replace
1.
Raise and support front of vehicle.
2.
Remove front wheel.
3.
Loosen brake line at caliper.
4.
Remove caliper lower attaching bolt. Swing caliper upward, then slide caliper out toward inside of vehicle.
5.
Disconnect and plug brake line from caliper.
6.
Reverse procedure to install.
Caliper Overhaul
1.
Clean outside of caliper.
2.
Remove dust boot retainer and the dust boot.
3.
Place a piece of wood in front of piston to avoid damage, then apply compressed air to fluid pipe hole and remove the piston. If piston is seized
and cannot be forced from caliper, tap lightly around piston while applying air pressure.
4.
Remove bleeder cap and screw.
5.
Thoroughly clean caliper components using clean brake fluid or alcohol and dry with compressed air. Do not use petroleum based solvents to
clean brake components.
6.
Reverse steps 1 through 4 to assemble caliper, noting the following:
a. Replace dust boot and piston seal.
b. Ensure piston seal seats properly in seal groove.
c. Lubricate caliper bore and piston with clean brake fluid.

d. Apply suitable grease to areas indicated in Fig. 2.
