Water Pump: Service and Repair
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable and, on carbureted engine, remove air cleaner.
2.
Disconnect electrical connector at water temperature switch or water thermo sensor as equipped.
3.
Disengage drive belt for A/C compressor and power steering drive belt, if equipped.
4.
Remove air pump and disengage drive belt.
5.
Remove alternator and disengage drive belt.
6.
Remove cooling fan and fan drive assembly.
7.
Remove pulley for A/C compressor.
8.
Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses.
9.
Remove water pump.
10.
Attach new gasket to surface of side housing that contacts water pump.

11.
Attach shims (for height adjustment) to stud bolts (2) and (4), Fig. 53.
12.
Install water pump and tighten by evenly applying torque of 13-20 ft.lbs. in sequence, Fig. 53.
13.
Connect upper and lower radiator hoses.
14.
Install pulley for power steering pump and A/C compressor, if equipped.
15.
Install cooling fan and fan drive assembly.
16.
Engage alternator drive belt and install alternator.
17.
Engage air pump drive belt and install air pump.
18.
Engage drive belt for A/C compressor and power steering pump, if equipped.
19.
Connect electrical connectors and install air filter if removed.
