Alternator: Testing and Inspection
Battery Overcharged
1.
Measure voltage at alternator B terminal, then slowly increase engine RPM. If voltage is less than 15.5 volts, proceed to step 2. If voltage is 15.5
volts or more, alternator or IC regulator is defective.
2.
Measure and compare voltage at IC regulator F terminal at idle and 3000 RPM. If voltage is higher at 3000 RPM, proceed to step 3. If voltage is
not higher at 3000 RPM, alternator or IC regulator is defective. F terminal voltage may not become high when battery is discharging.
3.
With battery fully charged, measure alternators L terminal voltage when engine speed is at 2500 RPM. If voltage is 14.7 volts on RX-7 or 14.2
volts on B2000, alternator is satisfactory. If voltage is not 14.7 volts on RX-7 or 14.2 volts on B2000, alternator is defective.
