Steering Gear: Service and Repair
With Manual Steering
Removal and Installation
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove horn cap.
2.
Mark steering wheel and column shaft, then remove steering wheel retaining nut and the steering wheel.
3.
Remove steering column cover retaining screws, then the covers.
4.
Remove air duct, then disconnect combination switch wiring connections.
5.
Remove combination switch retaining screws, then the combination switch.
6.
Position a suitable protector under the steering lock assembly, then using a chisel and hammer, remove steering lock body to column jacket
retaining bolts. Remove steering lock assembly from vehicle.
7.
Remove column jacket fixing bracket, then mark hood hinge locations and remove hood.
8.
Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect center link from pitman arm using a suitable puller.
9.
Using a suitable puller, disconnect pitman arm from steering gear sector shaft.
10.
Remove steering gear housing retaining bolts, then the steering gear housing through the engine compartment.
11.
Reverse procedure to install. When installing the steering lock assembly, tighten the new shear bolts until the heads of the bolts snap off.

Drain lubricant from gear housing by removing filler plug, Fig. 1.
