Secondary Diaphragm: Testing and Inspection

Checking Secondary Throttle Valve Diaphragm

1.

Disconnect vacuum hose from secondary throttle valve diaphragm and connect vacuum pump.

2.

Apply approx. 8" Hg (200 mm Hg) vacuum to diaphragm and hold while opening throttle to wide open position.

^

Diaphragm should hold vacuum without leaking, and secondary throttle valves should remain closed, when primary throttle is wide open.

If not, replace diaphragm.

3.

Release vacuum (disconnect vacuum pump) while holding primary throttle wide open.

^

Diaphragm linkage rod should extend and secondary throttle valves should open when vacuum is released. If not, check secondary throttle
valves for sticking or binding. Also check secondary throttle linkage spring for correct installation. Repair or replace as necessary.

Checking Vacuum Check Valve

4.

Check vacuum check valve for proper operation. Valve should let air pass only in one direction. If air flows both ways through valve, replace it.
Install check valve with arrow towards vacuum source.
