Engine - Oil Leaks in Cold Ambient Temperatures

Bulletin No.: 01-020/08

Last Issued: 03/21/2008

Subject:
OIL LEAK IN LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURE - DIPSTICK OR CRANKSHAFT SEAL

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINs
2008 Tribute 3.0L

DESCRIPTION

Some 2008 Tribute vehicles may exhibit engine oil leaking from the dipstick tube or the front or rear crankshaft seals. The condition is likely due to
positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) freezing when the ambient temperature is below -20°F (-30°C), allowing engine crankcase pressure to build up.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1.

Verify customer concern by performing oil leak diagnostics according to the Workshop Manual (section 01-01 ENGINE OIL LEAKS).

2.

If leaks are verified at oil dipstick tube and at front and rear crankshaft seals, install an electrically heated PCV kit and replace PCV components
according to the instructions in the kit.

3.

Verify repair.
