EXCESSIVE ENGINE EXHAUST NOISE OR EXHAUST ODOR

2008 Tribute 3.0L
DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may exhibit excessive engine and/or exhaust noise, or exhaust odor due to an exhaust leak at the joint between the catalytic converter
manifold flange and cylinder head joint. The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will not be illuminated, and no related diagnostic trouble code (DTC)
will be present.
Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
This procedure only applies if no related DTCs are present.
1. Verify customer concern.
2. Remove affected catalytic converter manifold assembly. Refer to MS3 online or Workshop Manual:
^ LH - section 01-15B LH CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD - 3.0L (4V) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
and/or
^ RH - section 01-15B RH CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD - 3.0L (4V) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
3. Clean both engine and manifold surfaces. Refer to M53 online or Workshop Manual (section 01-10 EXHAUST MANIFOLD
CLEANING/INSPECTION) for Exhaust Manifold Cleaning and Inspection procedures.
4. Replace exhaust manifold gasket, exhaust manifold studs and nuts, and reinstall the original catalytic converter manifold. Refer to M53 online or
Workshop Manual:
^ LH - section 01-15B LH CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD - 3.0L (4V) REMOVAL/ INSTALLATION.
and/or
^ RH - section 01-15B RH CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD - 3.0L (4V) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
NOTE:
It is very important the two stage manifold nut torque sequence is followed.
5. Verify repair.
