Air Door Actuator / Motor: Description and Operation

PURPOSE 

The vacuum elements (servos), which are located on the heater box, heater valve, and the evaporator housing, adjust the position of the distribution flaps,
recirculation flap, blend flaps, and the heater valve, as directed by the TCC control unit.

CONSTRUCTION

The vacuum elements consist of a diaphragm with connecting rod, and a return spring encased in a sealed plastic housing. There are two types of vacuum
elements, single stage and dual stage. The recirculation and defroster flap elements are two stage elements while the footwell, blend air, and heater valve
elements are single stage. The two stage elements provide a two stroke (long and short) feature for stepped adjustment of the corresponding flap.
Three of the vacuum elements are attached to the heater box. They operate the defrost, legroom, and the blend air distribution flaps. An additional
vacuum element is located inside the evaporator housing for operation of the recirculation flap and one is fitted to the heater valve.

OPERATION

When the operator selects a climate control function the push-button control unit energizes the appropriate electric solenoid of the switchover valve unit.
Vacuum from the engine and or the vacuum reservoir is connected via the switchover valves to the corresponding vacuum element(s) opening or closing
the flaps.

Vacuum modes:

Defroster flaps closed with vacuum, open without vacuum to the element.
Blend air flaps open with vacuum, closed without vacuum to the element.
Legroom flaps open with vacuum, closed without vacuum to the element.
Fresh air/recirculation flap closed with vacuum, open without vacuum to the element.
Heater valve operation closed with vacuum, open without vacuum to the element. 

In the event that vacuum or the control system fails:

The heater valve will be opened.
The blend air flaps will be in the "full heat" position.
The recirculation flap will be in the fresh air mode.
The defroster distribution flaps will direct air to the windshield.
