Suspension Spring ( Coil / Leaf ): Service and Repair

    On gas pressurized shock absorbers and separating pistons with the piston rod located at the top, with the vehicle raised and axle half free of
load, ensure that the piston rod is not turning while loosening upper attaching nut. In this condition, the deflection stop within the shock
absorber rests against the operating piston and the attachment of the operating piston to the piston rod may loosen. The gas pressure within the
shock absorber may force a sudden extension of the piston rod and leaking of the shock absorber oil will result.

201 SERIES

    When removing front coil springs, use spring tensioner tool 201589003100 and spring tensioner socket tool 20158901900 or equivalents.

1.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.

2.

Remove lower engine compartment lining, if equipped.

3.

Insert tensioning plates of spring tensioner tool (offset by 90°) into front spring. Ensure that at least 7-1/2 coils of spring are engaged between
tensioner plates.

4.

Insert tensioner screw through control arm opening. The webs of tensioning screw and guide sleeve must be correctly seated in the two
tensioning plate grooves.

Place spring under tension.

While supporting control arm, loosen upper attaching nut. When loosening the upper attaching nut, use a counterforce to piston rod nut. Do
not use an impact wrench to loosen attaching nut. Do not loosen attaching nut with axle half fully unsprung. Ensure control arm is
properly supported.

7.

Slightly lower front axle half and remove coil spring and rubber mount.

8.

Reverse lower front axle half and remove coil spring and rubber mount.
