REPLACEMENT TIMING CHAIN FOR DIESEL ENGINES 615,
616, AND 617 INCLUDING INDUSTRIAL ENGINES

For the above diesel engines, the material for the spare-part timing chain and master link has been changed. When installing the modified chain, a special
tool (fig. 3) is required to press the master connecting link plate onto the chain link (previously inserted by hand).

The modified timing chain is of a bright-metal color (previously blue). The middle link-plate of the modified master link is also bright metal while the
two outer link-plates are blue.

Repair Instructions 
The previous spare-part timing chain and connector link are no longer valid.

The timing chain should only be replaced in case of complaints, (e.g. noisy chain, valve timing off).

When replacing a damaged timing chain, the chain sprockets should be checked for wear (e.g. badly worn, bent or broken teeth) and the tensioning rail
for damage (e.g. badly worn, cracked or broken): replace if necessary. Also check that the chain tensioner is working correctly, taking note that on
turbocharged engines, the thrust pin has to be removed and then put back, (Job no. 05-310) (renew chain tensioner if necessary).

Assembly is unchanged apart from insertion of the master link.

Inserting Master Link

After lining up both ends of the chain on the sprocket, insert the master link into the chain towards front of engine (fig. 1, arrow).
