REPAIRING CLEAR COATED SOLID COLOR PAINT FINISHES OR
OXIDIZED (DULL) SOLID COLOR PAINT FINISHES

(Note: Step 10 was inadvertently omitted in previous issue)

NOTE:

Always refer to the Safety Procedures outlined in chapter 1, section 1.0 of the Refinishing Manual before performing any repair work.

Clear coated solid color paint finishes should be repaired by applying a 2K top coat and a clear coat (high gloss). This method can also be used for
repairing oxidized solid color paint finishes. The procedure for performing such repairs is described below:

1.

Prepare vehicle for refinishing. Remove trim where necessary. Thoroughly wash and clean vehicle exterior. Clean and wipe all surfaces with
silicone remover. Mask all areas not to be painted.

2.

Repair minor damage such as scratches, dings and stone chips in the usual manner. Spray EP (epoxy) primer-filler to repair areas.

3.

Thoroughly wet sand new parts (or entire vehicle when repairing oxidized paint) with 500 (P1000) grit sandpaper. Avoid sanding through to the
bare metal.

4.

New parts or bare metal on repaired areas must be sprayed with EP primer-filler and dried with an infrared lamp.

5.

Wet sand area with 500 (P1000) grit sandpaper.

6.

Clean and wipe all surfaces with silicone remover.

7.

Spray 2K solid top coat. Layer thickness: 50 to 60 microns.

8.

Drying time:

air

6 to 8 hours at minimum 68°F (20°C)

oven

approx.

20 minutes at 176°F (80°C)

approx.

30 minutes at 158°F (70°C)

approx.

40 minutes at 140°F (60°C)

9.

Wet sand defects with 500 (P1000) grit sandpaper. Avoid sanding through the newly applied top coat.

10.

If the newly applied top coat has been sanded through, spray 2K solid top coat to the affected area and blend into surrounding surface. Dry with
infrared lamp for approx. 15 to 20 minutes at a distance of 10 to 12 inches (250 - 300 mm).

11.

Wet sand entire vehicle or repaired area with 500 (P1000) grit sandpaper.

12.

Clean and wipe all surfaces with silicone remover.

13.

Spray 2K clear coat (high gloss). Layer thickness: 50 microns.

14.

Drying time:

air

6 to 8 hours at minimum 68°F (20°C)

oven

approx.

20 minutes at 176°F (80°C)

approx.

30 minutes at 158°F (70°C)
