Camshaft and Timing Chain Drive Inspection

ENGINES 102.961/985 WITH SINGLE ROLLER TIMING CHAIN CAMSHAFT AND TIMING CHAIN DRIVE INSPECTION

At 30,000 miles (48,000 km) and at every Maintenance Service thereafter, the camshaft and timing chain drive are to be inspected for noisy operation
and wear under the following conditions, with the engine cold or at operating temperature:

starting the engine

at idle

^

raising engine speed to approximately 1800 rpm.

If noisy operation is found, perform the procedures described in the attached W.I. # 222a.

Note:
For engine 102.985, only camshafts manufactured from chilled cast iron and rocker arms with carbide inserts are available as spare parts. The new
process and materials will reduce the likelihood of premature wear. The modified camshaft can only be installed together with the modified rocker arms.

The modified camshaft is identifiable by the code 35. Some code was temporarily used.

For engine 102.961, the previous version camshaft and rocker arm will continue to be available as spare parts.

On engines in which the modified camshaft and rocker arms are installed, stamp the mounting surface, next to the coolant temperature sensor (B11/2)
with the letter "S".

The previous version camshaft (part no. 102 050 48 01) currently in dealer inventory should be returned to the facing PDC by April 20, 1989.

Rocker arms, part no. 102 050 01 33, can only be used on engines 102.961, together with camshaft, part no. 102 050 22 01.
