ENGINES 102.961/985 AND 103 OIL CONSUMPTION

In case of customer complaints regarding oil consumption, first verify the complaint with the customer [how frequently (mileage interval) is oil added to
the engine]. An oil consumption test is not necessary at this time unless the engine is equipped with new viton valve stem seals (see 1.3).

1.1.

Check the engine for external oil leaks around the valve cover, cylinder head, engine block, oil pan, etc. and for correct engine oil level.

Note:
Ensure that the engine oil level is not above, the MAX mark on the, dipstick.

1.2.

If no external engine oil leaks can be found, replace valve stem seals with new viton valve seals (SMS Engine 102 Mechanical III and SMS Engine
103 Mechanical II, job no. 05-270). Mark valve cover with a white paint dot after repair.

Oil Consumption Inspection

The exhaust valve stem seal (A) differs from the intake seal (B) in shape (arrow), bore dimension (D) and color of wire ring (48/1 and 49/1, Fig. 1).
