Effective Serial Number - Viton valve stem seal

With the valve cover removed, also inspect the following:

Engines 102 and 103 inspect the camshaft and rocker arm contact surfaces for wear (W.I. 222, Grp, 05, topic 3).

Engine 102 inspect the single roller timing chain, camshaft gear and intermediate gear for wear (W.I. 222, Grp. 05, topic 2).

Engine 103 verify that the oil return pipe is secured using the new bracket (see 1.4 of this S.I.).

Note:
If the timing chain and/or camshaft are replaced, they are to be returned to the Warranty Inspection Department.

1.3.

If a customer continues to complain about oil consumption on an engine with the new viton valve stem seals (look for white dot on valve cover or
see chassis end number), an oil consumption test must be performed to verify the complaint (see S.I. 18/36, April 1988). If the oil consumption
complaint is verified, contact your Region Service Representative for further action.

1.4.

Engine 103 only As of October 1986 production the oil return pipe (42) for camshaft lubrication is additionally secured with a small bracket (41).
The bracket is secured, without a washer, to rocker arm bearing bracket no. 3 using the rear bolt on the intake manifold side (40, Fig. 2). The
bracket must be retrofitted to earlier production vehicles using a new bolt (without washer). See also S.I. 05/88, November 1991.
