refractometer. If below the "MIN" mark, top up each cell with water first, then shake the battery or wait 3 hours so that the water is mixed
into the acid. If temperature correction is required, add 0.004 to the specific gravity reading for each 10°F (5.5°C) increase in temperature.
Conversely, subtract for lower temperatures. Refractometers automatically compensate for temperature.

At 80°F (27°C):

The density in the cells should be within 0.06 of each other. If one or two cells are much lower than the rest, the battery may be defective.
Perform a load test.

Load test procedure:

Note: 

If the acid density of a battery is less than 1.24, recharge it (see section 3), prior to performing a load test.

2.5.1 Disconnect negative battery cable and then positive battery cable. Remove the battery from the vehicle.

2.5.2 Measure the temperature of a center cell. Cover the battery with a wet cloth to provide some protection if battery acid should spill.

2.5.3 If the battery has just been recharged, allow it to sit for at least one half hour before performing a load test.

2.5.4 Connect load tester to battery, following tester manufacturer's instructions. Be sure to make a good connection.

2.5.5 Apply a test load as shown below for 15 seconds.

2.5.6 If the battery voltage at 15 seconds, then remove the load.

2.5.7 If the voltage is above that shown in the chart for the temperature measured, the battery is good and should be returned to service.

2.5.8 If the battery voltage falls below the figure given, fully recharge the battery (see section 3) and test it again.
