Vacuum Pump: Service and Repair
Piston Type

Removal/Installation

REMOVAL

1.

Disconnect vacuum line from vacuum pump.

2.

Remove vacuum pump attaching bolts, then the vacuum pump and gasket from crankcase.

INSTALLATION

1.

Install vacuum pump to crankcase using a new gasket, then tighten attaching bolts securely.

2.

Connect vacuum line to pump.

Disassembly/Assembly

DISASSEMBLY

1.

Secure vacuum pump in holding fixture No. 115589142100 or equivalent, with fixture spindle completely backed out. Casting seam on vacuum
pump must be centered between the two forward screws of holding fixture.

2.

Move piston rod and piston to TDC position by turning holding fixture spindle up to stop.

3.

Remove pump cover attaching screws and the cover.

4.

Remove pump cover gasket, then the gaskets and plate valves from housing.

5.

Remove locknut and washer from piston rod.

6.

Fully back out holding fixture spindle, then remove piston from housing using suitable pliers.

7.

Remove piston disc from pump housing, then the piston ring and O-ring from piston. If piston liner shows signs of wear, the vacuum pump
must be replaced.

8.

Remove rocker arm shaft plug from housing.

9.

Screw fabricated tool into piston rod. Turn down nut to compress spring, then remove pump from holding fixture.

10.

Remove shaft, then the piston rod, spring assembly rocker arm and fabricated tool from pump housing.

11.

Back tool out of piston rod, then remove spring retainer and springs. The rocker arm and piston must be serviced as an assembly only.

ASSEMBLY

1.

Position spring retainer and springs on piston rod. Compress assembly with fabricated tool, then install into pump housing.

2.

Install rocker arm shaft into pump housing.

3.

Apply suitable locking compound to rocker arm shaft plug, then install plug with new seal and torque to 6-7 ft. lbs.

4.

Secure pump to holding fixture and turn holding fixture spindle up to stop, then remove fabricated tool.

5.

Thoroughly clean piston, then lubricate and install new O-ring and piston ring.

6.

Push piston rod up to stop using holding fixture spindle. Ensure piston rod flange is centered in upper spring retainer.

7.

Position piston disc on piston rod, then lightly lubricate piston liner.

8.

Install piston, using care to avoid damaging piston ring.

9.

Install washer and locknut on piston rod. Back out spindle and bottom piston out against housing, then torque locknut to 7 ft. lbs.

10.

Install plate valves and new gaskets into pump housing.

11.

Install pump cover and torque attaching screws to 2 ft. lbs.

12.

Remove vacuum pump from holding fixture.
