Fuel Pressure: Testing and Inspection

1.

Connect fuel pressure/vacuum gauge between fuel pump inlet and fuel supply line.  Start engine, run at idle, and pinch the fuel hose between the
gauge and fuel supply line with a clamp.  If there is a vacuum reading of 3.0 in. Hg (0.1 bar), proceed to step 2.  If the vacuum reading is less than
3.0 in. Hg (0.1 bar) replace the fuel pump.

Connect the fuel gauge between the fuel delivery pump and the fuel filter inlet.  Start engine and bring it to normal operating temperature.

Check the fuel pressure reading at idle.  If the pressure is 8.7 to 11.6 psi (0.6 to 0.8  bar), proceed with step 6.  If the pressure is below this range,
proceed to step 5.

With the engine running at normal operating temperature, check the pressure at 3,000 RPM.  If the pressure is approximately 11.6 psi (0.8 bar),
proceed with step 6.  If pressure is above this specification, proceed to step 5.

5.

Check the overflow valve, replacing it if necessary.  Check the fuel filter and lines for obstructions or restrictions.  Install a new filter or clean fuel
lines.  If no problems are found in the two areas mentioned in this step, replace the fuel pump.

6.

With the gauge connected as in step 4, run the engine and pinch closed the fuel return hose with the clamp.  

7.

Check the pressure reading at idle.  If the pressure reading at idle is 16 psi (1.1 bar) minimum, proceed to step 8.  If the pressure did not meet this
specification, replace the fuel pump.

8.

Check the pressure at 3,000 RPM.  If the pressure reading at 3,000 RPM is 18.9 psi (1.3 bar) minimum, the system checks out good and the test is
over.  If the pressure did not meet this specification, replace the fuel pump.
