REFINISHING OF PLASTIC BODY PANELS

The refinishing of plastic body panels no longer presents any special problem. This practice should become more common to reduce the amount of scrap
material as much as possible.

General
The plastic panels (bumper and side panels) used on Models 124, 126, 129 and 201 are painted in colors that contrast with the metal panels (except 129,
signal red).

Repair Options

1.

Component replacement

Components that are cracked or have scratches deep into the material should be repaired using 3M part nos. 05900 or 05901.

We recommend that small components such as mirror housings, wheel center cap, door handles, tailgate trim strip, bumper rub strip, etc., be
replaced even if damage is limited to the paint.

Note: 

Bumpers and side panels for models 124, 129 and 201 are supplied only in sato grey and should be painted according to the specified procedure in
the appropriate contrasting color before installation.

Refinishing

In the case of minor damage, such as short flat scratches, stone damage or customer desired color change, refinishing is possible.

Note: 

In case of repainting or painting new components, it is imperative that the parts be completely painted with KS-1K-filler before applying the top coat
to prevent inadequate paint adhesion when the components are subjected to potentially damaging road debris, or steam cleaners.

Exception: 
When refinishing a panel using the blending method for color matching purposes, the application of KS-1K-filler can be limited to the damaged area. 
Paint adhesion is satisfactory on sanded surfaces on which clear coat is applied over an existing clear coat.

Designations and disposal of plastic components

These components will be labeled according to their composition to assist in repair or recycling. The designation is enclosed with > < symbols to ensure
easy identification.

Example: > PUR < (Polyurethane)
Plastic components should be disposed of with recycling companies when possible.

New MB labeling for plastic component paints

Paints intended for plastic materials will carry a KS designation to allow better differentiation.

Example: KS-1K-filler
In addition, the complete material designation will be printed in yellow.

Work procedures

Components should be prepared off the vehicle. The integral chrome strips should be removed.

The plastic components must be positioned or suspended in such a way that they will maintain their shape during oven drying.

The repair process can be made easier by using a universal component painting stand.
