GROUP 54 - BATTERY DEFECT REPORTING PROGRAM

Effective January 1, 1995, we ask all dealers to provide complete battery failure information in the text field of all warranty claims in which a battery is
replaced (Damage Code 54001), for a period of three months.

Despite significant actions by MBNA and MBAG, the battery failure rate in new vehicles remains excessive. In order to determine what further actions
need to be taken, it is necessary to gather detailed information concerning battery failures. This program is expected to end on March 31, 1994, or earlier
if sufficient information is gathered.

To ease MB-Net warranty claim data entry, dealership personnel may record the required information by using the Battery Test Sheet, Order No.
S-2392-C92. Detailed procedures may be found in Service Information MBNA54/38 (October 1993). Claims without this information may be returned
to the dealer for correction. Therefore, it is mandatory that the following information be entered into the dealer text field on all warranty claims where a
battery is claimed:

1.

The manufacturer of the battery. (e.g., Baeren, Bosch, Hagen, Hoppecke, Varta, GNB, etc.) This is located next to the "Mercedes-Benz" label.
Note: GNB batteries are not identified as such, but are familiar as a spare part.

2.

The date code of the battery, which is stamped on the battery pole. Note: GNB batteries do not have a pole stamp, but a code label beginning with
the letters DUN and a 2 position date code.

3.

Electrolyte Specific Gravity (not the voltmeter test voltage) for each of the six battery cells, with the Positive (+) and negative (-) cells indicated.
The actual numerical readings must be provided, notations such as "zero" or "water" are not acceptable. Please provide accurate information -
claims with implausible readings are subject to being returned for correction.

4.

Electrolyte temperature (in degrees Fahrenheit) at time of electrolyte test above. Note: This measurement is not listed on the test sheet.

5.

Load test voltage at the end of the 15 second load test, using an MBNA approved digital voltmeter. Measure to the nearest 1/10th of a volt.

6.

The size of the battery, in Amp-hours (Ah). Note: Also not listed on the test sheet.

7.

The reason for the battery failure (e.g., customer left lights on, vehicle in stock for 5 months, failed component caused current draw, etc.).
