Ball Joint: Service and Repair
Ball Joint, Lower
300E & TE w/4MATIC
1.
Raise and support vehicle.
2.
Remove lower engine compartment cover.
3.
Remove front wheel(s).
4.
Compress front springs.
5.
Disconnect stabilizer bar from spring bracket and control arm.
6.
Remove ball joint to steering knuckle pinch clamp bolt.
7.
Remove ball joint self-locking nut and bolts, then remove.
8.
Reverse to install.
EXCEPT 300E & TE w/4MATIC
On 1990-91 300CE models, the ball joint and lower control arm are serviceable only as an assembly.
1.
Remove steering knuckle, refer to STEERING/COMPONENT R&R PROCEDURES/STEERING KNUCKLE.
2.
Position steering knuckle in suitable soft jawed vise.
3.
Using suitable tool, remove ball joint.
4.
Reverse to install, noting the following:
a. Using suitable tool, press ball joint into steering knuckle.
