REF. NO. 40/88
To: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS
DATE: January 1989
SUBJECT:
VEHICLE VIBRATIONS
MODEL 126
In case of customer complaints about vehicle vibrations at various road speeds, the type of vibration should be determined first. To do so, test drive the
vehicle on a smoothly surfaced (i.e. blacktop) roadway.
The following different types of vehicle vibrations should be considered:
1.
Vibrations at speeds above 50 mph, noticeable in seats, on vehicle floor and steering wheel.
2.
Vibrations at speeds above 60 mph, noticeable as steering wheel shimmy.
Possible Causes:
Wheel imbalance, flat spots on the tires, out-of-round tires as well as vertical or lateral wheel rim runout.
Note:
Radial runout of tires must be checked immediately following road test.
Remedies:
1.
Inspect front and rear tires for flat spots or excessive runout, and rotate tire(s) on rim(s) to obtain minimum runout (refer to S.I. 40/56) if required.
2.
Balance the wheels "Off" the vehicle and again on the vehicle.
Note:
For on-the-car wheel balancing work, the Hofmann IPK Finish Balancer is recommended.
For further reference on this subject, refer to S.I. 40/85 and S.I. 40/7 (Proper mounting and balancing of tires).
3.
Test drive the vehicle on a smoothly surfaced roadway. If the vehicle vibrations continue to exist after following the aforementioned procedure,
and even after replacing wheel rims and tires, contact your Zone Office.
The Hofmann IPK Finish Balancer is presently available from:
