Crankshaft Seal Retainer: Service and Repair

NOTE:  Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

Replacement

1. Remove transmission
2. Remove drive plate.
3. Unbolt end cover (119) together with radial shaft seal (322).
4. Press end cover off at plates (arrows).

NOTE:  Pay attention to oil pan gasket.

5. Clean sealing surfaces.
6. Examine contact surface of radial shaft seal at crankshaft.

NOTE:  If contact surface has grooves, remove radial seal and install repair size radial seal with sealing lip offset to the inside.

7. Coat end cover sealing surface with sealant 001 989 4520 10.
8. Coat sealing lip of radial shaft seal with engine oil.

NOTE:  Do not use grease. Grease prevents the return flow swirl on the sealing lip transporting back the engine oil.

9. Press end cover (119) on over insertion tool together with radial seal (320).

10. First, tighten bolts (120) to 9 Nm.
11. Tighten bolts (151) to 10 Nm.
12. Check for leaks at rear of engine.

NOTE:

The end cover is sealed with sealing compound at the crankcase and centered with 2 dowel pins. In addition, it is bolted to the oil pan and
sealed at the bottom by the oil pan gasket. There must not be any scoring or unevennesses in the sealing surface of the end cover and of the
crankcase.
