91-625 Instructions For Replacing Seat Belts

A. If mechanical damage exists

The belt webbing may be damaged if seat belts are improperly used (wrongly cleaned, improperly stowed or jammed). For this reason, always inspect the
belt webbing visually during each maintenance service. If the fibers of the belt webbing are broken or if the webbing has been damaged, for example, by
a smouldering cigarette, the customer's attention should be drawn to the need to replace the belt. If the webbing is chafed without the fibers being broken,
it is not necessary to replace the belt. If a customer declines to replace a damaged seat belt, the repair order form should be endorsed accordingly.

In dealing with the complaint "Seat belt does not retract properly", check whether the belt retracts properly by hand and whether it has twisted through 
180 ° below the trim as a result of improper handling, before removing the belt. Take off the covering to inspect the belt properly.

B. Following an accident

If one or both emergency tensioning retractors were not activated during an accident, carry out an inspection for signs of mechanical damage as specified
in Para A.

If one or both emergency tensioning retractors were activated during an accident, the complete ETR should always be replaced, and the belt buckle
should be inspected for signs of mechanical damage, and replaced if necessary.

Activation logic of ETRs (standard)

Both emergency tensioning retractors are activated simultaneously (parallel circuit).

Activation logic of airbag with ETR (up to approx. 06/93 and (USA))

Only the ETR whose latch is inserted in the belt buckle, is activated.

Activation logic of airbag with ETR (as of approx. 07/93 except (USA))

Both emergency tensioning retractors are activated simultaneously (parallel circuit).

The front passenger ETR is activated simultaneously with the driver ETR only if the seat is occupied.

The driver ETR is activated only if the belt latch is inserted.

The passenger ETR is activated only if the seat is occupied and the belt latch is inserted.

Checking whether ETR has been activated

Check ETR housing visually. The ETR has been activated if no cable can be seen in the inspection window.
